Sour Flour
Brittany Wood / West Warwick, Rhode Island
One scroll through Brittany Wood’s Instagram feed and you’ll know she’s a sourdough obsessive. Boasting photos of golden loaves sliced in half to reveal their open crumb and whole loaves displaying Brittany’s creative scoring patterns, Brittany’s feed will make you want to take a deep dive into sourdough. A newcomer to the sourdough scene, Brittany has been making boules only since January 2019. She had always been inspired by other bloggers making artisan bread and decided to make it her New Year’s resolution to learn to make her own sourdough in 2019. At first, Brittany posted about her sourdough on Instagram as a way of documenting her process, but soon, more and more people followed and asked for advice. “So many people need help when it comes to sourdough. I realized my account could be a way of being there for them,” she says.

Brittany has now developed her ideal sourdough and makes all of her featured loaves from the same starter (its name is Sherry). You can find her master recipe on her blog, Sour Flour, with detailed tips and advice, along with more ways with sourdough like bagels and challah. If you head to her Instagram feed, you’ll find an endless source of inspiration for scoring patterns—from simple geometrics to intricate floral motifs. Brittany even posts quick videos of her scoring so you can replicate each one. Armed with Brittany’s tips and signature scoring, you’ll have everything you need to make your most Instagram-worthy boule yet.
Must-Bake from the Blog: “The Master Sourdough Bread with sunburst scoring. This pattern is really easy but creates a gorgeous contrast. It’s by far the most popular pattern I’ve made.”
